The Alhambra. Jerusalem's Dome of the Rock. The Taj Mahal, which bankrupted an empire in the name of love, and the Eiffel Tower, the first structure to surpass the height of the Great Pyramid of Cheops. Through monuments we learn about history, culture, the rise and fall of civilizations—for example, that to create the giant stone figures of Easter Island, up to 20,000 natives must have lived there before denuding the island’s rain forests and disappearing. Or that the bridges and canals of historic Amsterdam actually connect ninety man-made islands, making the city of merchants one giant dock and warehouse. A subject perfectly attuned to the strengths of Fandex—its family-friendly format, die-cuts and illustrations, and lively educational essay-per-entry—The Wonders of the World is an essential introduction to our most magnificent buildings and monuments. From Egyptian pyramids to the International Space Station (the only man-made wonder not on earth), it covers 4,500 years of world history. The authorship is impeccable—Anthony M. Tung is |a walking encyclopedia of the history, principles, and practices of urban preservation . . . a genius in [his] field,| writes Tom Wolfe. The reach covers the whole world. And the information is fascinating: Did you know that the bronze for the dazzling Renaissance altar canopy of St. Peter's was stripped from the ancient Roman Pantheon? Or that the Himeji Castle in Japan was built to deceive, as a mile-square labyrinth of mazes, false floors, and spiraling alleys?

Book Communicating Emotion at Work PDF Free

Communicating Emotion at Work PDF
By:Vincent R. Waldron
Published on 2011-11-21 by Polity

Emotional communication is a crucial but often underappreciated force in our working lives - it enhances or impedes occupational success, forges meaningful bonds among co-workers, and shapes the moral character of our workplaces. Collective performances of emotion define an organization's culture. They define how organizations are perceived by their customers and communities. Although often subject to perverse manipulation, the communication of emotion can make our work humane, rewarding, and even good. Communicating Emotion at Work chronicles the rich emotional experiences of employees drawn from a broad cross-section of industries and occupations. It takes a decidedly positive approach, recognizing that emotional communication is a vital and creative response to the challenges of life in complex organizations. The text introduces readers to the engaging and cross-disciplinary body of research that has emerged around organizational emotion. At the same time, each chapter is steeped in real-life emotional narratives, concrete examples, and the contemporary trends that are changing the emotional tenor of work. Designed to help readers become more mindful of the organizational practices that shape their emotional well-being, this accessible text will be particularly useful in courses focused on organizational communication, business, and organizational behaviour.

Book Researching Emotions in International Relations PDF Free

Researching Emotions in International Relations PDF
By:Maéva Clément,Eric Sangar
Published on 2017-12-05 by Springer

This edited volume is the first to discuss the methodological implications of the ‘emotional turn’ in International Relations. While emotions have become of increasing interest to IR theory, methodological challenges have yet to receive proper attention. Acknowledging the pluralityof ontological positions, concepts and theories about the role of emotions in world politics, this volume presents and discusses various ways to research emotions empirically. Based on concrete research projects, the chapters demonstrate how social-scientific and humanitiesoriented methodological approaches can be successfully adapted to the study of emotions in IR. The volume covers a diverse set of both well-established and innovative methods, including discourse analysis, ethnography, narrative, and visual analysis. Through a hands-on approach, each chapter sheds light on practical challenges and opportunities, as well as lessons learnt for future research. The volume is an invaluable resource for advanced graduate and postgraduate students as well as scholars interested in developing their own empirical research on the role of emotions.

Book The Interwoven Sources of Dreams PDF Free

The Interwoven Sources of Dreams PDF
By:Umberto Barcaro
Published on 2010 by Karnac Books

The subject of this book is the study of the complex pattern of links among the memory sources of dreams. This study is performed through a linguistic and partially automatic analysis of verbal data, including dream reports and associations with the report items. The approach is interdisciplinary: it regards the fields of psychology, linguistics, computer science, mathematics (graph theory), history of psychology, literature, and motion pictures. The method is scientifically rigorous: literature and motion pictures are specifically considered for their efficacy in providing interesting examples. The method described is efficacious and not difficult to apply. It allows obtaining plausible explanations, through the application of heuristic rules, for significant aspects of a dream. This book is different from other books on the subject of dreaming in its specific perspective: it is focused on the study of the links among dream sources. The interdisciplinary approach taken in this book hopes to prove a useful and enlightening addition to published literature on this topic.
