Book Biology and Emotion PDF Free

Biology and Emotion PDF
By:Neil McNaughton
Published on 1989-07-13 by Cambridge University Press

The author describes an approach to the analysis of emotion that can be used independently of conventional emotion theories: that expression, feeling, and motivation can be considered in a scientific manner. As a central theme he argues that biological and, in particular, evolutionary considerations are useful in understanding the basic components of emotion, and he applies this idea to a wide variety of the phenomena of emotion. The resultant review should be useful as an undergraduate text in which the explanations are aimed at the nonspecialist. The specific conclusions should be of interest to anyone who conducts research on emotion, and particularly those who need a solid framework on which to base interdisciplinary studies.

Emotions, Cognition, and Behavior PDF
By:Carroll E. Izard,Jerome Kagan,Robert B. Zajonc
Published on 1988-05-27 by CUP Archive

The seventeen contributions to this volume demonstrate the enormous progress that has been achieved recently in our understanding of emotions. Current cognitive formulations and information-processing models are challenged by new theory and by a solid body of empirical research presented by the distinguished authors. Addressing the problem of the relationship between developmental, social and clinical psychology, and psychophysiology, all agree that emotion concepts can be operationally defined and investigated as both independent and dependent variables. Cognitive and affective processes can no longer be studied in isolation; taken together, the chapters provide a useful map of an increasingly important and active boundary.

By:Alex J. Zautra
Published on 2006-01-01 by Oxford University Press, USA

In this volume, Alex Zautra illustrates how experience with difficult or stressful emotional situations can, contrary to popular belief, be beneficial; for example, our ability to adapt to stress can be improved by experiencing difficult moments on emotional intensity. Zautra masterfully integrates research and theory on emotion and stress, identifying a unique and important role for stressful life events. He offers new insights into how stress and emotions can influence health and illness and demonstrates the wide applicability of this perspective across domains of love and marriage, work, aging, and community. By reviewing research on chronic pain, depression, child abuse, and addiction, Zautra also provides new insights into clinical problems.

Blue Dreams PDF
By:Lauren Slater
Published on 2017-06-13 by Little, Brown

A start-to-finish narrative history of our major psychotropic drugs, from |a thoroughly exhilarating and entertaining writer| (Washington Post). As our approach to mental illness has oscillated from biological to psychoanalytical and back again, so have our treatments. With the rise of psychopharmacology, one in five Americans now takes a psychotropic drug, yet seventy years after doctors first began prescribing them, we still don't really know exactly how or why they work--or don't work--on what ails our brains. In Blue Dreams, Lauren Slater offers an explosive account not just of the science but of the people--inventors, adherents, detractors, and consumers-behind our licensed narcotics, from the earliest, Thorazine and Lithium, up through Prozac, Ecstasy, |magic mushrooms,| the most cutting-edge memory drugs, and neural implants. In so doing, she narrates the history of psychiatry itself and illuminates the signature its colorful little capsules have left on millions of brains worldwide, and how these wonder drugs may heal or hurt us.

Emotions, Aggression, and Morality in Children PDF
By:William Frank Arsenio,Elizabeth A. Lemerise
Published on 2010 by Amer Psychological Assn

|Aggression and other moral transgressions, such as cheating, lying, and stealing, are by their basic nature emotionally charged. Whether the transgression involves a preschooler taking another child's toy, a middle school child lying about a peer to stay out of trouble, or an adolescent involved in an armed robbery, victimizers are likely to feel a range of intense emotions, whereas their victims will feel different, but no less intense, emotions. But how and why do these acts of victimization become charged with emotions? And what do these emotions tell us about both those who become routine victimizers and those who learn to inhibit victimizing behaviors? Finally, is victimization primarily a matter of affective influences, or do cognitive abilities also play an important role? The chapters included in this volume share a unifying theme: the need to understand how children and adolescents' emotions, moods, and other affective processes interact with their social cognitions to influence moral and aggressive tendencies|--Introduction. Book Affective Neuroscience PDF Free

Affective Neuroscience PDF
By:Jaak Panksepp
Published on 2004-09-30 by Oxford University Press

Some investigators have argued that emotions, especially animal emotions, are illusory concepts outside the realm of scientific inquiry. However, with advances in neurobiology and neuroscience, researchers are demonstrating that this position is wrong as they move closer to a lasting understanding of the biology and psychology of emotion. In Affective Neuroscience, Jaak Panksepp provides the most up-to-date information about the brain-operating systems that organize the fundamental emotional tendencies of all mammals. Presenting complex material in a readable manner, the book offers a comprehensive summary of the fundamental neural sources of human and animal feelings, as well as a conceptual framework for studying emotional systems of the brain. Panksepp approaches emotions from the perspective of basic emotion theory but does not fail to address the complex issues raised by constructionist approaches. These issues include relations to human consciousness and the psychiatric implications of this knowledge. The book includes chapters on sleep and arousal, pleasure and fear systems, the sources of rage and anger, and the neural control of sexuality, as well as the more subtle emotions related to maternal care, social loss, and playfulness. Representing a synthetic integration of vast amounts of neurobehavioral knowledge, including relevant neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and neurochemistry, this book will be one of the most important contributions to understanding the biology of emotions since Darwins The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals

Book What Doctors Feel PDF Free

What Doctors Feel PDF
By:Danielle Ofri
Published on 2013-06-04 by Beacon Press

A look at the emotional side of medicine—the shame, fear, anger, anxiety, empathy, and even love that affect patient care Physicians are assumed to be objective, rational beings, easily able to detach as they guide patients and families through some of life’s most challenging moments. But doctors’ emotional responses to the life-and-death dramas of everyday practice have a profound impact on medical care. And while much has been written about the minds and methods of the medical professionals who save our lives, precious little has been said about their emotions. In What Doctors Feel, Dr. Danielle Ofri has taken on the task of dissecting the hidden emotional responses of doctors, and how these directly influence patients. How do the stresses of medical life—from paperwork to grueling hours to lawsuits to facing death—affect the medical care that doctors can offer their patients? Digging deep into the lives of doctors, Ofri examines the daunting range of emotions—shame, anger, empathy, frustration, hope, pride, occasionally despair, and sometimes even love—that permeate the contemporary doctor-patient connection. Drawing on scientific studies, including some surprising research, Dr. Danielle Ofri offers up an unflinching look at the impact of emotions on health care. With her renowned eye for dramatic detail, Dr. Ofri takes us into the swirling heart of patient care, telling stories of caregivers caught up and occasionally torn down by the whirlwind life of doctoring. She admits to the humiliation of an error that nearly killed one of her patients and her forever fear of making another. She mourns when a beloved patient is denied a heart transplant. She tells the riveting stories of an intern traumatized when she is forced to let a newborn die in her arms, and of a doctor whose daily glass of wine to handle the frustrations of the ER escalates into a destructive addiction. But doctors don’t only feel fear, grief, and frustration. Ofri also reveals that doctors tell bad jokes about “toxic sock syndrome,” cope through gallows humor, find hope in impossible situations, and surrender to ecstatic happiness when they triumph over illness. The stories here reveal the undeniable truth that emotions have a distinct effect on how doctors care for their patients. For both clinicians and patients, understanding what doctors feel can make all the difference in giving and getting the best medical care.
